Umjolo the pandemic

Image
Umjolo to my understanding is a word borrowed from our South African neighbors which is loosely translated to mean a 'relationship'. Correct me if am wrong.  My fellow SAYWHAT SRHR defenders took to Facebook to discuss this topic about young people being in a relationship and how it is closely tied to sexual reproductive health and rights. I did not get to listen to the whole podcast but this is what I think about the whole thing; It is true there's a link between young people in relationships and sexual health because it is obvious that people in a relationship are most likely to engage in sexual activities, and because there's trust (in most cases) between the two, there's usually unprotected sex. Young girls have being lured into relationships which result in unwanted pregnancies because there were given false hopes of true love. How many young people have dropped out of school because of circumstantial marriages? A lot! Young women and girls are more trusting (...

Dead ZUPCO buses all over Harare roads.

Image
At first I think the reintroduction of ZUPCO buses as the sore transport providers restored a little bit of sanity to the city which was now overrun by private commuter owners who saw it fit to park wherever they want and broke traffic rules at will. However the ZUPCO monopoly got out of hand, they were ill prepared to meet with the transport demands and as a well to cope with the pressure they introduced dead forgotten old buses back on the road which are always breaking down and crushing into people's cars and premises. A few days ago I went into the city centre using Willowvale Rd and counted 4 buses which were broken down in the middle of the road, creating ttaffic mayhem and unwanted jams. One vehicle owner unfortunately got his motor crushed into because the bus had lost its brakes. I met a driver who remarked that at one point he nearly killed passengers when he lost control of the brakes and said he had to use his expertise to stop the bus. These are crazy stories. We need...

Pollution in the Mukuvisi river

Image
We have had a pretty long holiday, thank whoever who put the Zimbabwean Heroes and Defence forces Days on a Monday and Tuesday. Because of the abundant time I had, I decided to do a visit to a little patch of riverine bushes near my area. This spot is where the Mukuvisi river snakes its way to Glen Norah suburbs. The moment I reached there I was a greeted by a heavy stench that filled the air and irritated my lungs which were happily filling my air sacks with the pleasant early morning air. Ok, am surprised why the City of Harare isn't doing anything to fine the and stop the companies who are dumping their refuse into the river. By the way, Mukuvisi is one of the tributaries of Lake Chivero from which our city gets its water from. Now, we should be more responsible eey because we're drinking this water for goodness sake! I for one stopped buying fish from Chivero, no sane person would enjoy eating a fish that's swimming in acid, sewer and all the gross stuff filled waters....
