Umjolo the pandemic

 Umjolo to my understanding is a word borrowed from our South African neighbors which is loosely translated to mean a 'relationship'. Correct me if am wrong.

My fellow SAYWHAT SRHR defenders took to Facebook to discuss this topic about young people being in a relationship and how it is closely tied to sexual reproductive health and rights. I did not get to listen to the whole podcast but this is what I think about the whole thing;

It is true there's a link between young people in relationships and sexual health because it is obvious that people in a relationship are most likely to engage in sexual activities, and because there's trust (in most cases) between the two, there's usually unprotected sex. Young girls have being lured into relationships which result in unwanted pregnancies because there were given false hopes of true love. How many young people have dropped out of school because of circumstantial marriages? A lot! Young women and girls are more trusting (imo) than their counterparts, who on the other hand may have 'side chicks' who they may be sleeping with. This creates an endless cycle of young people who are always at the risk of contracting STIs. That dosen't mean am dismissing the fact that young women are not a contributing factor too. Truth is this partnership called a relationship is under serious abuse from both sexes alike😳. Don't get me started on suicides which have escalated because of failed relationships and heartbreaks.

I honestly think that young people especially in relationships need to make informed decisions, put their health (sexual health and mental wellbeing) at the forefront and seek the advice of professionals for wiser choices. Its a good think we have our African culture which allows us to approach our aunties and such for relationship advice.

We really need a healthy young people who can be able to effect changes wherever they make be so that our communities can be sustainable places where everyone live positively.
