Harare Council Water; A Health Risk.
Harare City officials continue moving on its path of letting their residents consume unsafe water. Instead of admitting their failures, the top guys at the Town House have continually fed to the press false information about how clean and safe Harare tap water is. Infact, last year there was a tour to the water treatment plant in Norton where some chief engineers put on a show by drinking straight from the tap. However, every folk who live in parts of Harare which are supplied with council water watched these theatrics with raised eyebrows.
Harare Council water is unsafe for consumption. It is smelly, and murky and dirty at times. Early this week, I opened a tap and was disguited to find muddy black water running into a bucket. I took a photo and tried getting a response from the Mayor, Mr Mafume, but as always, he was blind to my post.
Who is to hold the city accountable? Earlier this year, Lake Chivero water made national headlines when a couple of rhinos were poisoned by its waters. Now, these are creatures with complex stomach systems designed of dealing with bacterias in the water, but for this case they still died. Now imagine, most people drink this council water on a daily basis! Much remains to be said, but I close off by saying that, we need serious accountability in Harare.
