Zimbabwe's LGBTQIA+ Community continues to face government animosity

 Hi Readers.

Last week, the Vice President Rtd. Gen C. Chiwenga put out an official state statement shaming Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) organisation for awarding scholarships to Zimbabwean LGBTQIA students at tertiary institutions. The retort was the scholarships are a bait to lure Zimbabweans into practices of the West and that Zimbabwe is a Christian nation. Now, this is all wrong, coming from the V.P. First of all, the majority of Zimbabweans are Christians but this does not make us an entire Christian nation. There are millions who have different religious views and that statement by the VP sidelines many non Christian Zimbabweans.  The Constitution is clear that we have the freedom of worship, this statement may make a lot of non Christian feel segregated. Secondly, no place in our laws makes one being gay illegal. Its a human rights violation to criminalise people for their sexual orientation. This is terrible.

African leaders have been known for not respecting the rights of all who are not heterosexual. Last year, Uganda made headlines for passing anti gay laws, with news that gay persons may face jail time or even death penalties. What makes other humans see it fit to use their power to oppress people who hold different views from them? I just don't know but it's sickening.

The greatest problem with our African leaders is corruption, abuse of power and violation of human rights. This is what we need to fix as Africans. Makomborero Haruzivishi echoed the same statement on his tweet (cartoon Tweet credited on this tweet). here; https://twitter.com/MakomboreroH/status/1758396752451780747?s=19

Respect Human Rights. || Respect LGBTQIA Rights.
