BeFoodWise: Reducing food waste for a cleaner planet.
We all eat food, but the way we eat has a huge impact to the environment and climate change. With the effects of climate change being felt world over, we are at a point where we should be rethinking about a lot of aspects concerning our living and interraction with/on this planet, and food systems is one of those important things.
The food supply chain is huge, from producers (farmers) to every individual who eats food. Food waste occurs anywhere on the supply chain. However, the majority of all food waste occurs in our homes. How?
- we purchase food we have no interest in eating, which ends up in the trash.
- we cook too much food, most of it is left uneaten and thrown away again.
- we do not properly store food, and it perishes easily without having been consumed.
Food waste is also occurs in restaurants. We all frequent public eating places, restaurants, street food stalls etc. Think of a situation when you ate a little and left a plate with unfinished food for the waiter to take away. The video below, which was produced by GOAL Global NextGen Youth members show us how we can avoid food wasting in restaurants. I hope you enjoy it😉
So how can we reduce food waste? Read the poster below and apply these tips next time you eat or buy food! 😀
Why is food waste a big deal?
So you might me thinking, food is biodegradable and causes less harm to the environment than plastics and other stuff. Well, think again. All that food we waste go to landfills. Experts say that toxic gases i.e methane are produced in landfills, and these gases damage our ozone layer and cause global warming. Evidence had shown that dangerous liquids seep from landfills into the ground, and those gases are bad news for creatures and plants. And also, we just can't be filling up the earth with our waste. If we continue this trend, are we going to be left with any land to dump our waste? Statistics show that over 2 billion tonnes of food is wasted each year. This number is huge.
How can we make a difference?
Journey of a thousand miles start with a step, inorder for us to accomplish big achievements and reduce those tonnes of food waste, we first start somewhere. We should make sure that everyday we are doing all we can to reduce food waste. If we all contribute in our small ways, we achieve big.
#BeFoodWise Project,
Is a GOAL Global NextGen project that was created by youth members Sineà d Rafter, Aiden Ruane, Jariatu Kamara, Martha Nabatanda, Christiana Ogale and me as a response to the growing food waste problem with the support from GOAL and Irish Aid.
