Road to the Transforming Education Summit.
Yesterday I made a submission of a video thats part of the youth solutions challenge for Unlock the Future of learning event at the TES in New York. I'm gonna share part of what I said, looking to engage with you in the comments.
Young people everywhere need education, infact it is one of their foremost right. But there is a growing concern about the lack of serious commitments to education. All of this of course has been made worse because we're recovering from a pandemic which derailed progress towards achieving quality education for all.
The challenges are that education is mot accessible to everyone, schools are no longer safe as hate crimes are now a common occurance in various places and there is need for education that is inclusive equitable and most importantly that offers learners skills for life.
Data shows 60mil children were out of schools before the pandemic and now 400mi risk dropping out of school because they are not fully open. An estimated 150mil afe engaged in child labour especially in poor countries, also not forgetting children living in conflict areas and refugee camps. Basic education should be freely accessible, no child should be left behind. I call for governments to increase spending in digital learning which proved a solution during the pandemic so that every child can access education even in the most marginalized areas. Stats show that two thirds of school going ages fo not have internet. Internet should be freely accessible. There should be learning centres in every community with digital tools for learning. There is need for funding in building better schools closer to learners and provision them with trained teachers.
To curb violence in schools governments should toughen gun policies and increase security in schools. Programs like the Safe From Harm should be introduced into the system to instill teachers and the school community with the right values. Clean sanitation and environmentally friendly areas should be put at learning areas to keep schools healthy.
Lastly young people have need for education that is inclusive and equips them with skills for life. I urge governments to recognize the calls to action of the Rio Declaration on Non formal education and put emphasis on SDG 4.7 which identifies the need of global citizenship education as a tool for ending war and conflict, hate, climate change and inequalities for the sustainability of our planet for us and the future generations.
